Step right up for a week-long circus extravaganza! Green Fools Theatre Society is coming to Oliver July 29 - August 2 to teach circus for ages 8 to 14. The camp is hosted by Venables Theatre and will allow youth to try a multitude of circus disciplines including stilts, unicycles, juggling, walking barrels, aerial skills and more!
For Green Fools Co-Founder Dean Bareham, circus and performing had a profound impact on him. “It really saved my life,” says Bareham, “I was a teen who could have easily slipped through the cracks, and it gave me direction.” During the camp the kids get to try everything from juggling to stilt walking. “We want to create a place where kids can participate in healthy risk taking and see that failure is okay,” says Bareham. At the end of the week, participants will create a performance for their families. In Bareham’s thirty years of experience teaching circus, he has experienced the incredible impact it has on kids. “During one of our camps in Calgary we had a young boy join us who had just arrived in Canada from Ethiopia. He was a refugee and didn’t speak English. Within days he was performing in the Jubilee auditorium and the rest of the kids had banded together to make sure he felt included.” About Green Fools From Alberta to Africa, the Green Fools have been fostering circus and theatre since 1991. Co-founded by Artistic Director Dean Bareham, the Green Fools are passionate circus educators, entertainers, and artists. In the last five years, the Fools have impacted over 14,000 kids through their circus programs and new circus school Studio G, which develop confidence and social skills. Over 1,100 of those kids received free programming. They have also performed children’s theatre and street performances across the globe. The Green Fools also create unique event entertainment with their custom costumes, circus artists, stilt walkers, and more. The mission is simple: changing the world one kid at a time. The Dime Notes – small band, huge swing! Blues drenched clarinet-driven 1920’s jazz with London's hard-swinging vintage jazz band.
The Dime Notes have a reputation for their unorthodox approach to the blues-drenched sounds of clarinet-driven 1920’s New Orleans jazz. They’ve toured extensively their repertoire of stomps, blueses, and forgotten gems of the era from musicians such as Jelly Roll Morton, Johnny Dodds, and Red Nichols. Fronted by Chris Barber’s long-time clarinetist David Horniblow, a reputable figure on jazz stages worldwide, and prize winning pianist/composer with an eclectic range of influences, Sam Watts. The band is anchored by the unstoppable pulse of London’s knockout rhythm section, guitarist Dave Kelbie, accompanist in Evan Christopher’s Django a la Creole, John Etheridge’s Sweet Chorus and bassist Louis Thomas, well known and in demand across many genre boundaries with his huge sound and stylistic versatility. The Dime Notes present a fresh take on a timeless style, emphasising the propulsive grooves and sultry melodies which made early jazz revolutionary, controversial, and wildly popular. Inspired! BODY PARTS
Tara Cheyenne Performance
Body Parts is a solo performance by veteran artist Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg, in which she tries to perform her show but gets comically side-tracked by her own body issues. Part stand-up comedy, part kinetic gesture and dance, Body Parts is a show about the show that never actually starts….or does it? Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg leads us through a heartbreaking personal landscape of body dysmorphia, disordered eating and self loathing with biting comedy and insightful and absurd social commentary.
Body image, body positivity, intuitive eating, etc. are all concepts swimming around social media, the “wellness” industry, and our minds. But do we feel better about ourselves? Do we feel like we can talk about the shame we experience around/in our bodies? Body Parts joyfully dismantles the damage inflicted by this shame. We desperately need to share our experiences and reveal the absurdity of ideas like “dancer body”, “bikini body”, and “getting your body back” after having a baby. This show is designed to start the important conversation about how we can begin to take the power back, enjoy the amazing things are bodies can do, and laugh through the tears together. Body Parts is appropriate for ages 13 and up. The show contains swear words, suggestive language and underwear. The performance is accompanied by a workshop for female identifying and non-binary folks on Thursday September 26th at 6:00. For more information and register, email [email protected]. The Sycamore String Quartet has delivered top quality live concerts to audiences throughout BC’s southwest interior since 2009. Violinist Cvetozar Vutev and cellist Martin Krátký originally formed the group to provide a jumpstart to what became a very successful chamber music component of the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra season and with the addition of violist Ashley Kroecher and violinist Sandra Wilmot, the Sycamore String Quartet has become a focal point of the Thompson-Okanagan live classical music scene. Whether bringing Haydn and Shostakovich to Princeton, Ashcroft, Revelstoke, and Oliver, or introducing larger audiences in Vernon and Kelowna to groundbreaking Canadian and international composers (e.g. Cam Wilson, Alan Gilliland, Dinuk Wijeratne, and Erkki-Sven Tüür), the group is known for its integrity of programming combined with a level of artistic excellence rarely heard outside of larger urban centres. Recent highlights include giving the world premiere performance of Imant Raminsh’s Clarinet Quintet in celebration of the composer’s 80th birthday in 2023.
Centering around the String Quartet No. 1 by British Columbia composer Imant Raminsh, this program will explore the depths of the human experience through music. Selections from J.S. Bach’s monumental Art of Fugue will open the program, highlighting the composer’s contrapuntal genius in what became his very last work written before his death in 1750. The String Quartet No. 1 by Imant Raminsh, based on a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke, will take the audience on a journey of introspective contemplation to outward exuberance. The program will be framed and punctuated by a couple other surprise gems from the string quartet repertoire. |

Snotty Nose Rez Kids tore into the music scene with unmistakeable talent and an unforgettable name. Showing off their lyrical prowess and natural storytelling ability, Yung Trybez and Young D jumpstarted the band with two back-to-back albums in 2017. Their follow up album, 2019’s TRAPLINE, really launched their career with hit “Boujee Natives,” and multiple awards including their first Juno nomination. The band took their high voltage live show on the road and clocked 100 shows in 6 different countries.
Their pandemic album, LIFE AFTER, saw greater industry recognition with multiple music magazine cover stories, and strong streaming platform support including Billboard advertisements in Toronto’s Yonge-Dundas Square, playlist cover images, and an Amazon Twitch Channel Takeover. Taking the album on the road, the band toured 80 shows in support of the album across North America. They received their second Juno nomination and performed during the live broadcast. They were invited by The Toronto Raptors to play a half time show, and to the Vancouver Canucks to play in-between periods. Their 2022 project, I’M GOOD, HBU? elevated their career to new heights, and saw them receive their fourth Polaris Prize Shortlist, a win for top music video of the year at the Prism Prize Awards for their Beatles-inspired, DAMN RIGHT, and landed them 3 Western Canadian Music Awards, bringing their tally to 13 wins so far. SNRK have gone on to dominate in Hip-Hop music, most recently achieving their biggest milestone, signing to Sony Music. SNRK are blazing their own path, weaving together a musical fabric of hard-hitting lyricism, revealing stories about the struggles they and their people have encountered, empowering protest songs for the front lines, and a humor that keeps even the heaviest of topics something you can vibe to. |

The rich complexity of life is the emotional focus of the latest, Juno-nominated album from one of Canada’s most accomplished and harmonious trios – Good Lovelies.
The songs on We Will Never Be the Same, crafted by the Juno Award-winning ensemble of Kerri Ough, Sue Passmore and Caroline Marie Brooks, are as compelling as the engaging vocal harmonies for which the group has been known for the last 17 years as they mine the complex feelings experienced by women who have come to ponder some of the big questions of life. This new album is both a return to a more elemental, acoustic-based musical platform reaching back to the early days of the Good Lovelies, as well as an immersive emotional experience crafted by three seasoned songwriters who bring their own real-life stories in all their dynamism and messy complexity to the fore. We Will Never Be the Same is the group’s fifth full-length studio album adding to a widely acclaimed catalogue of recordings that also includes two beloved Christmas releases. It adds to their already popular concert repertoire as they return to tread the boards in venues throughout North America, the U.K., Europe, Australia, and beyond. It is a testament not only to their artistry, but also their humanity, and is an album that will continue to endear this beloved group to fans of all ages. |

Canadian comedy veteran Steve Patterson is…PatterDad!
“Not all dad jokes are bad jokes” Many Canadians recognize the name Steve Patterson. He’s been a crowd favorite since his first Just for Laughs Gala appearance back in 2004 and as host of the long-running hit show The Debaters on CBC since 2007. But what they may not know is how Patterson’s perceptions have shifted since he became a dad to two precocious daughters. Those new perceptions are on grand display in his new show which picks up on the themes introduced in his popular book published by Penguin Random House Canada in 2021 “Dad Up!” From being outsmarted to being outrun to being outnumbered (current household rankings have him clinging to 6th place in importance behind his wife, his daughters, their dog, and whichever stuffed animal is most essential in any given week), Steve struggles to come to terms with the responsibilities of being a dad. But fortunately for audiences, his struggles are pure comedic delight. Come join this iconic Canadian comedian on a 90-minute fun ride that will warm your heart, rekindle memories, and maybe most importantly, will get you out of the house and laughing with strangers. Which, really, is the best gift families can give to each other. Steve Patterson is an award-winning stand-up comedian with over 25 years of international performance experience. As host of the long-running hit radio show and podcast The Debaters and theatre show The Debaters Live, Patterson’s brand of comedy is best described as honest and erudite combining well-crafted writing with unparalleled off-the-cuff wit. Twice named Canada’s Best Male Stand-Up at the Canadian Comedy Awards, Patterson is known for masterfully keeping the audience engaged with heartfelt stories, concisely constructed letters, and original songs. In short, Patterson packs much more than punchlines into his show. A household name in Canadian comedy through his long-time radio hosting and numerous televised gala appearances, Steve served as anchor for the “If It Makes You Happy” Gala at the Winnipeg Comedy Festival in 2022 which debuted on CBC and across various media platforms in 2023. He has also taken his award-winning humour to the literary world with The Book of Letters I Didn’t Know Where to Send and his newest release Dad Up! are available wherever books and audiobooks are sold. These celebrated chamber musicians are members of prominent European orchestras such as the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, National Opera of Paris, and the Liège Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. As with their adopted city of Brussels (Belgium), Ô-Celli is a cosmopolitan ensemble which is represented by five different nationalities. There are some artists who happen to be in the right place at the right time… that moment when the door is still slightly open and there’s just enough space to sneak through. Then there are those artists who find themselves standing in front of a closed door, but instead of waiting for it to open they kick it in to go through. In the rise of Spoken Word’s popularity, that open door cannot be discussed without saying the name Shane Koyczan.
In 2010, the world caught a glimpse of Koyczan’s prodigious talent with his presentation at the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. This stand-out performance helped shine a light on this street poet from Vancouver’s downtown east side. Shane had been an artist, inches away from living on the street, who even in those troubled times was putting out work like To This Day, a video that’s garnered 24 million views and is used worldwide in classrooms as a teaching tool, as well in speech and forensic competitions. His second book, Stickboy, was adapted into an opera by Vancouver Opera. His voice has been sought after by luminaries like George Miller, who worked with Shane on Mad Max: Fury Road. Koyczan also created the piece, Shoulders, which he toured with David Suzuki as part of The Blue Dot Tour, a movement to enshrine environmental rights in the constitution. In 2017 Shane invited us deep into family trauma with the documentary “Shut Up And Say Something”, an emotional trip through his past as he comes to terms with his estranged father. The film went on to win Most Popular Documentary at Vancouver International Film Festival, moving audiences with its bravery and vulnerability. After a number of critical successes in the book world, Shane chose to depart from convention and carve out his own path as an independent artist. Koyczan launched his own publishing house, Stickboy Press, whose first collection was brought to life by a crowd funding campaign in which 1,688 backers pledged $91,154 to make A Bruise On Light, a Guinness record holder as the most money raised through crowdfunding for a book of poetry. Shane followed this success by publishing two graphic novels, Silence Is A Song I Know All The Words To and Turn On A Light. It feels safe to say that there seems no territory beyond the reach of Koyczan’s pen or of his heart. An artist whose work has transgressed genres and given breath to a new generation of voices, Shane Koyczan wears the mantle of human and dares others to discover what that means. A self-motivating machine, Shane also recently released a new collection of poems called The Basement In My Attic, and worked with Theytus Books to publish Inconvenient Skin, a journey into Canada’s own troubled history with residential schools and the treatment of indigenous people. |

Alex Cuba is a Grammy and Juno winning; singer, songwriter, producer and musician. Born Alexis Puentes in Artemisa, Cuba and now living in Smithers, BC, Canada. His first musical memory was playing claves (a Cuban rhythm instrument) at the age of 4 alongside his father on national TV, and went on to study guitar, then electric and upright bass, touring and recording nationally and internationally, before moving to Canada in 1999. His sound is the unique confluence of tradition and global influences in articulate arrangements, conveying emotions through melody and lyric. In 2022, he won a Grammy for Best Latin Pop for “Mendó” as producer, artist and engineer, his proudest accomplishment of the 20+ awards and nominations he has received as an independent artist over 9 albums.
His musical evolution for years was all about searching for the simplicity and soul in Cuban music – taking apart the complex arrangements, mixing it with North American influences, adopting the melodic simplicity of pop music, looking to Cuban folk traditions for inspiration – he’s always exploring, always creating something fresh and new, and always, it seems, getting it just right. “I always believed, from the beginning of my career in Canada, that if music is beautiful, it will cross the language. The international touring band The Wildflowers are North America’s #1 Tribute to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.
“Who doesn’t love Tom Petty?” bassist Darryell Stone asked himself one day in 2012 while listening to the radio. There was only one answer he could imagine, “Nobody.” Testing his hypothesis, Stone polled friends, family and fellow musicians how they felt about Petty. The result was always the same. Everyone loves Tom Petty. One of these fellow musicians just happened to be Tom Petty’s doppelganger, guitarist and lead vocalist Jonathan Guthrie. Guthrie was an avid fan and had always fantasized about being a Heartbreaker. As two seasoned musicians and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers fans, there was really only one thing for them to do – form a Tom Petty tribute band. It wasn’t hard for Stone and Guthrie to find skilled musicians excited about playing in a Tom Petty tribute band. Drummer Steve Lucas, formerly of Feverdog and a bandmate of Stone’s local band, Theatrix, quickly signed on. Lucas brought with him his M-80’s band mate Glenn Freeman. Freeman, who boasts of seeing multiple Tom Petty concerts in the 80s, brought an instrumental cornucopia to the group with keyboards, harmonica, guitar and backing vocals. Lead guitarist Curt Granger rounded out the lineup. With 30+ years experience in Birmingham’s local music scene, Granger has played in such circuit bands as Pyrate, Scream Sophie, and his own solo project, as well as creating a line of world-renowned boutique guitar amplifiers. The new Tom Petty tribute band rehearsed with one focus – to recreate the music of Tom Petty with precision, attention to detail, and a reverent respect. Parts were studied in great detail, down to inflections in the very way each word of every lyric was sung. Performing locally in the first year, it didn’t take long for the band to be noticed. Word spread quickly, which led to more shows outside the band’s home state, which led to more word of mouth and exposure. Soon the band was gaining interest from venues across the southeast, which led to more travel and more Tom Petty fans discovering them. Jump ahead 100 shows and The Wildflowers have become one of the most popular tribute shows across the southeast US, and quickly gaining recognition in other regions. Equipped with decades of experience and a passion for Tom Petty’s magic way with songs, The Wildflowers bring music lovers of all stripes what they adore. More Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. |

For over three decades now HOTEL CALIFORNIA have been recreating the legendary sound of THE EAGLES, and thrilling audiences all over the world. The band set the bar in 1986, and they’ve remained the industry leading substitute for The Eagles ever since. Playing to huge outdoor and arena audiences, sharing bills with some of rock’s legends, and going places no tribute band has gone before. A long run by any measure, but it begs the question - what makes HOTEL CALIFORNIA so special? Well, incredible lead vocal similarity, intensely accurate instrumental work, soaring harmonies, and top flight live performances, just for starters. These are the band’s hallmarks, and the foundation on which their reputation has been built. With over a century of collective professional experience in the band today, they’re still going stronger than ever!
HOTEL CALIFORNIA’s show has evolved into a masterful celebration of The Eagles’ music. One of the most game-changing song catalogs in the history of rock n’ roll is performed to perfection before your eyes and ears. The band also offers tons of value-added promotional support and materials to every client, and the confidence that industry insiders have in them has made HOTEL CALIFORNIA one of the world’s most accomplished tribute productions. You can check them out any time you like, but you’ll never want to leave. If you love The Eagles, then welcome to the Hotel California – you’ve just found the next-best thing. TICKETS: $55 |
