The Vividus: Full of Life program features a stunning lineup of signature works from Ballet Kelowna’s contemporary ballet repertoire. With John Alleyne’s ground-breaking Schubert, Alysa Pires’ striking Vestiges and Guillaume Côté’s electrifying Le Carnaval des Animaux, this high-energy program from Canada’s leading dancemakers promises to please a wide range of spectators.
Originally commissioned by Ballet BC in 2000, John Alleyne’s Schubert honours three pillars of a dancer’s experience: youth, beauty, and wisdom as it reflects on the central role women play in the evolution of the art form. Set to Franz Schubert’s luminous Piano Trio No. 2 in E-flat Major, the work brings an “inherent... sensuousness and sophistication,” (The Georgia Straight) to its rhythmic and emotionally resonant portrayal of the stages of a dancer’s career. Award-winning choreographer Alysa Pires constructs a striking commentary on the search for true connection and meaning amid disorder. Set to the cinematic melodies of violinist Hilary Hahn and composer Hauschka, Vestiges highlights the virtuosity of Pires’ bold and lively choreography. Guillaume Côté, Principal Dancer and Chorographic Associate with The National Ballet of Canada, applies his fresh, artistic vision to a jovial rendition of Camille Saint-Saëns’ Le Carnaval des Animaux, regarded as one of the French composer’s best-known works. Full of whimsical ornamentation, this upbeat ensemble piece pushes the limits of contemporary ballet and promises to delight audiences with its exuberant energy of frolicking and fun. With a style perpetually galvanized by darkness and haunting northern beauty, sisters Tiffany Ayalik and Inuksuk Mackay come together to create Inuit style throat singing duo, PIQSIQ. Performing ancient traditional songs and eerie new compositions, they leave their listeners enthralled with their ability to weave complex emotional landscapes that transcend language.
In Inuktitut, a “piqsiq” is a storm where winds blow in a very specific way, making it seem as if the snow is falling back up towards the sky. This otherworldly, natural phenomenon has become a source of inspiration for the duo, reminding them that things are not always as they seem. With roots in Nunavut’s Kitikmeot and Kivalliq Regions, the sisters grew up in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, where endless sunlight shines for two short summer months and deep, wintery darkness consumes the rest of the year. These environmental extremes impacted the way Tiffany and Inuksuk’s aesthetic developed and the pair have always engrossed themselves in creating soundtracks to life that reflect this natural phenomenon. The sisters loved to practice katajjaq, Inuit style throat singing, during long trips out on the land, and the practice has continued to bond them together throughout their lives. As the sisters approached adulthood, they continued to learn about Inuit history and the abhorrent laws instituted by the Canadian Government under Colonization. They were devastated to discover how katajjaq was regarded as an evil practice by the church, along with many other cultural Indigenous practices. By the 1960s, through shaming, banning and punishment by law in the forms of fines and imprisonment, katajjaq had all but gone extinct. This realization led them to study katajjaq not only as music, but as a radical, political act of decolonization. The sisters have performed many traditional style sets over the last two decades, and in more recent years have taken the dive into blending their style with new technology. Their live performances, in alignment with katajjaq’s original form, take inspiration from the world around them combined with their own thoughts and feelings and an invitation to the audience to help steer the journey songs will take. Creating performances this way allows the audience to experience spontaneous compositions that are unique to each individual show. As PIQSIQ, they perform improvisational looping live and incorporate the winter darkness and ethereal feel into their recordings. The pair have released four studio albums to date; Altering The Timeline, Quviasugvik: In Search of Harmony, Taaqtuq Ubluriaq: Dark Star, and PIQSIQ: Live from Christ Church Cathedral. |

Every few millennia, a comic emerges, born from the cosmic soup of fate and time, jostled by the gales of change onto the unpredictable shores of comedic brilliance. This is a man who embodies pluck and wit, lighthearted yet encumbered, and a naivete that somehow remains endearing. As Derek says: In the grand contest of life, he stands proudly as a bona fide "participant."
Well ... truth be told, there’s a lot more to it than that. From Vegas to St. John's, this Just For Laughs veteran is universally considered to be among the comic elite. Certainly his peers think so, as evidenced by the fact that he's a four-time nominee, and winner of Best Standup Comic - Canadian Comedy Awards, as well as a multiple Gemini nominee for Best Performance in a Comedy. As Rick Mercer says, "Everyone knows Derek is the funniest man in Canada." Clearly the critics agree: "5 STARS - the funniest man on earth" - Winnipeg Free Press; "4 STARS - the crowd howled" - Victoria Times Colonist; "still the funniest man in Canada" - Toronto Sun; "Edwards reigns as the King of Canadian comedy" - Charlottetown Guardian; "Derek Edwards is hysterical" - Calgary Sun; "Edwards takes stand-up to next stage" - Georgia Straight; "the epitome of timing & storytelling" - Halifax Chronicle Herald; "the comedian's comedian" - London Free Press. So come on out and join Derek for his latest show, Oxy Moron, as it makes its way across Canada. Expect a night of perceptive guesswork and charmingly misguided jabs from a cherished performer. Enjoy some hearty laughs, a sprinkling of wisdom, and the pleasure of mingling with fellow humans. It's a triple win! TICKETS: $71 |

Cyril doesn’t like old people, which is a shame because he is one. When he learns his estranged granddaughter, Lily, has her big break with her thrash metal band, Abscess, he and his friend Neville are determined to show up and support her. Neither of them will ever be the same again. AWOL is a buddy adventure caper about two men who decide they’ve had enough of bland food, dull company and care home radio.
UK comedian, poet and former nurse Rob Gee wrote the show after reading a news item from Germany: “It turned out not to be true, but it inspired me to write a buddy movie-style adventure caper with a positive message about ageing. It’s also a love letter to metalheads!” Rob has performed over 100 fringe festivals across the world and won over twenty awards for his solo shows. Fringe hits include SmartArse (“Be prepared to be blown away” - CBC) and Forget Me Not: The Alzheimer’s Whodunnit (“This is terrific theatre” - Vancouver Sun). Jon Paterson has worked in theatre for thirty years and performed at every major fringe festival in North America. He toured his first solo-written show How I Met My Mother last year, exploring his relationship with his mother in the wake of her dementia (“Humorous, heartfelt and moving” - Orlando Sentinel). Rob and Jon have been friends for sixteen years. Rob said, “I knew Jon would be perfect for this show and when Ryan came on board also, the three of us immediately hit it off. If we’d been at school, they’d never have allowed us to sit together.” Director Ryan Gladstone is the artistic director of Monster Theatre and creator of numerous fringe hits, including Til Death: The Six Wives of Henry VIII and Juliet: A Revenge Comedy. 山彦太鼓 Yamabiko (meaning ‘Mountain Echo’ in Japanese) Taiko was founded in 2003 in Kelowna, BC, Canada.
The Beginnings Yamabiko Taiko began with very humble and simple desires: purely to enjoy and play Japanese Taiko-style drums and be lost in their power and grace. With only a few members led by Eri Uchida, we were able to acquire our very crude but effective drums. They were homemade with regular packing tape and, believe it or not, cut-to-size sewer pipes (unused of course!) donated by the City of Kelowna. Weekly practices weren’t even scheduled; the group gathered together whenever possible in the basement of a member’s house. And so with this Yamabiko Taiko was born! Who knew what was to come… Today Yamabiko Taiko has evolved into a regularly performing group. Most performances are held in the southern interior of BC. Practices are held on Monday and Thursday evenings in the basement of the Kelowna Buddhist Temple. For more information, email Yamabiko Taiko from our Contact page. You can also find us on Facebook. As well as being an award-winning singer and songwriter with groups like Bare Facts, The Hitops, and Tiller’s Folly, Bruce has long been recognized as one of the great vocal interpreters of our time. In this show, he puts all of that experience and interpretive skill into sharp focus as “Van the Man.” Be prepared to be totally entertained as “Van the Man” brings, with the utmost respect, energy, and joy, this great icon’s career to life. He emerged in the early 1960s as vocalist for Irish blues group Them. Even in the early days, Van Morrison had a distinctive sound, and he laid down his uniquely expressive vocal lines with confidence and soulful conviction. So convincingly that songs like Gloria, Here Comes the Night, and Baby, Please Don’t Go… and then in 1967 came Brown Eyed Girl, one of, if not the most iconic sing-along songs of the last century! In 1970, Van Morrison recorded two albums: Moondance and Van Morrison, His Band and the Street Choir. From these two albums alone flowed a stream of enduring classics: And It Stoned Me, Moondance, Crazy Love, Caravan, Into the Mystic, Blue Money, Domino, and so many more. Vocalist Bruce Coughlan (Tiller’s Folly) fronts this six-piece music revue, performing our picks of Van Morrison’s most lively, engaging, and best- loved songs! |
